It Might Be More Than You Think...
Toothaches can be caused by a number of things. In some instances, there might be some unseen debris lodged between teeth, which can be removed by brushing, rinsing and flossing thoroughly. Once eliminated, the teeth eventually go back to normal and the toothache subsides. Some people address toothaches by placing an aspirin between the teeth and gum, however, this method is not a recommended way to relieve pain. When the aspirin dissolves, it may damage the gum tissue.
Broken, Fractured, or Displaced Tooth
Toothaches may also be experienced when a tooth or teeth are broken, fractured, or outright displaced. These instances are commonly not a cause for alarm, as long as immediate and decisive procedures are taken to address the dental concern. If you experience any of these, visit the Orange Door Dental Group as soon as you can so that we can give you the proper treatment.
When your tooth gets knocked out of place, we recommend attempting placing the broken end of the tooth back in the socket as you proceed to our practice. Make sure you rinse your mouth to get rid of blood and remaining debris, and that the tooth has been cleaned by only saliva or water. Place a cold cloth or compress on the cheek near the injury to reduce swelling. The same can be done when a tooth is fractured.
If it cannot be relocated back to its socket, the dislodged tooth must be held at the crown, never at the root, and placed in a container of warm milk, saline or your own saliva. It must remain in the solution as you make your way to our dental office.
Inflamed Dental Pulp?
The worst case of toothache is when it is caused by an inflamed dental pulp. The innermost layer of the tooth, the dental pulp can become inflamed for a number of reasons, which include tooth decay, receding gums, and abscesses, among others.
If you have a toothache that has lasted for more than two days, we recommend you visit us at the Orange Door Dental Group so we can conduct a meticulous evaluation and recommend the necessary treatment.
